How to install a razor wire chain link fence?
Installing a razor wire on top of a chain link fence can be a highly effective method for increasing the security of a premises. However, it should be noted that it's a dangerous material to work with, and all necessary precautions should be taken to ensure a safe installation.
If you decide to proceed with the installation, you would follow these general steps:
1.Preparation:
- Have all necessary materials and tools on hand. This includes the chain link fencing, razor wire, fence posts, tie wires, gloves, and safety gear.
2.Install the Chain Link Fence:
Steps:
-
Plan and Mark Fence Layout:
- Decide the location of the corners and end points of the fence.
- Mark these locations with stakes.
- Stretch a string between these stakes to indicate where the line posts will go.
- Dig Post Holes:
- Using a post hole digger or auger, dig holes for the end posts, corner posts, and line posts. Typically, these holes should be 2-3 times wider than the diameter of the posts and 1/3 of the post's length plus an additional 6 inches for the gravel base.
- Place a few inches of gravel at the bottom of each hole for drainage.
- Install End and Corner Posts:
- Place the end and corner posts in their respective holes.
- Ensure they are level using a plumb bob or level.
- Mix concrete and pour it into the holes around the posts.
- Allow the concrete to set according to the manufacturer's instructions, typically 24-48 hours.
- Install Top Rails:
- Slide a rail cap onto each end and corner post.
- Insert one end of the top rail into a rail cap and attach it to the next post, continuing this until you reach the other end or corner post.
- Install Line Posts:
- With the top rail in place, measure the height of the chain link fabric and add 2 inches. This is the height at which you'll install line posts.
- Slide a post into the hole and ensure it touches the string line. Make sure it's level.
- Pour concrete into the hole around the line post. Continue this for all line posts.
- Attach Chain Link Fabric:
- Stand the chain link fabric roll vertically against the first end or corner post.
- Slide a tension bar vertically through the links at the end of the fabric.
- Attach this bar securely to the post using tension bands and bolts. Make sure the fabric is on the outside face of all posts.
- Roll out the chain link fabric along the fence line.
- When you reach the next end, corner, or gate post, cut the fabric to fit and attach it with a tension bar and bands.
- Stretching the Chain Link:
- Attach the fence puller or come-along to the fabric and the far end or corner post, then crank it to stretch the chain link tightly between the posts.
- Once taut, attach the fabric to the post as before.
- Secure Fabric to Top Rails:
- Use tie wires or fence ties to attach the chain link fabric to the top rails every 2 feet.
- Install Gate (if applicable):
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install any gates. Ensure the gate posts are set deeper than regular posts for added support.
- Finishing Touches:
- Once everything is set, and the concrete is cured, go around the fence and ensure all fasteners are tight and that there are no sharp edges on the chain link fabric.
3.Install Fence Posts Extensions:
- If the existing fence posts aren’t high enough for the razor wire, you may need to install fence post extensions. These extensions should protrude at an angle, facing outward from the secured area, to make it more difficult for someone to climb over.
4.Roll Out The Razor Wire:
- Wearing protective gloves, carefully unroll the razor wire along the ground beside the fence.
5.Attach Razor Wire to the Extensions:
- Lift the razor wire to the top of the fence, and using tie wire, attach the razor wire to the fence post extensions.
- It's easier to have a partner to help with this step - one person can hold the razor wire in place while the other secures it with the tie wire.
- Ensure the razor wire is securely fastened to prevent it from falling or being pushed down easily.
6.Secure Razor Wire to the Chain Link Fence:
- Every few feet, tie the razor wire to the chain link fence using tie wire to ensure it's securely in place along the entire length of the fence.
7.Safety Precautions:
- Make sure to clearly mark the fence as having razor wire to prevent accidental injury.
- Properly dispose of any scraps of razor wire to prevent injury.
